Scientists at St. Louis University are trying to use enzymes as a catalyst in fuel cells to generate electricity without the storage and safety problems of hydrogen. New Scientist reports in this story that they've done very well using ethanol as the catalyst, going so far as to run their batteries -- which they hope can be used in cell phones, laptop computers, and the like -- on gin and vodka.

And at some point we'll post a photo or two. Executive summary: It went very, very well. Kudos to the GAMA show management for bearing up under the load of twice as many retailers as expected, and still hosting a good event. Thanks to the WizKids guys for providing such a great freebie that it (I suspect) was responsible for at least a couple of hundred of those extra bodies. Thanks to both our booth crew (for dealing with such a crowd that at one point the line for our stuff went around the corner and three booths back) and those who stayed behind and put together an emergency shipment of 300 more retailer packets and a like number of Munchkin Monster Manual, Transhuman Space hardbacks, and Valor and Snarl dragons (yes, we were being generous with the freebies, too).
It went well, indeed. Now wait till NEXT year!

They've been criticized for wasting their time. I beg to disagree. The last thing I read about the House passing was a bill to outlaw all human cloning research. If that's what they do when they are "serious," I would FAR rather they occupy themselves by insulting the French.

March 2, 2003: NNTP All 'Round
As of last Sunday, all of our zines (JTAS, Pyramid, and d20 Weekly) use NNTP for their message board systems. This is a Good Thing because:
- Readers of any of our zines can use specialized news-reading software (such as trn, Outlook Express, Netscape Communicator, or Free Agent, to name a few) to read the message boards.
- Subscribers to more than one zine can now read all of the message boards in one place.
- Message boards -- including playtest boards -- can be shared between multiple zines. Right now, for example, our Marketplace board is available to subscribers of any of our zines!
- Our zine message board system has been rewritten from the ground up -- it's leaner, faster, and takes full advantage of mod_perl and Mason. And it will now be easier for us to add more new features.
- A bunch of other technical stuff that won't interest most of the users of the zines, but I'm sure happy about them.
