November 11, 2010: Once And Future GURPS: Rootin' Tootin' Shootin'

The geeky GURPS editors are now previewing a PDF of GURPS Tactical Shooting, by Hans-Christian Vortisch. It won't be long before you can get your hands on it. While you wait, consider getting ready for it . . . as a gamer, a writer, or both.

Gamers: If you're planning to run a campaign built around the cult of the gun, then you might want to consider some handy supplements that we've already published! You'll certainly want GURPS High-Tech, since that's where the guns live. A campaign set in the 1920s, '30s, or '40s would benefit greatly from the period firearms in GURPS High-Tech: Pulp Guns 1 and 2, and from the hand-to-hand combat methods in GURPS Martial Arts: Fairbairn Close Combat Systems. If you are seeking a 1960s or '70s feel, or just want your tactical shooting to include jungle warfare, be sure to check out GURPS SEALs in Vietnam. Once you reach the 1980s, the GURPS Action series is a perfect match; it's highly cinematic, but then action movies often focus on tactical details. In any era, GURPS Gun Fu and GURPS Tactical Shooting are collectively "GURPS Martial Arts for guns," so you'll want both if the details of using guns are as important to you as the weapons themselves.

Writers: The sooner you start planning projects that support this supplement, the more likely you'll be the first across the wire with a proposal. Let's look at the wish list. Sorting through all of the gear in GURPS High-Tech and matching it to the rules in GURPS Tactical Shooting could be incredibly time-consuming, so GURPS Loadouts volumes that provide sets of gear carried by real-world tactical shooters (such as commandos and SWAT teams) would be very welcome. GURPS Supporting Cast items that provide complete stats for teams of shooters would probably go over just as well. There's also an obvious opening for a GURPS Action title that simplifies shooting techniques and perks in much the same way that GURPS Action 3: Furious Fists simplifies melee abilities from GURPS Martial Arts. I also wouldn't mind seeing ready-to-go shootouts as part of the GURPS Encounters series, further hand-to-hand combat methods for gunmen added to the GURPS Martial Arts series, SWAT vans and similar tactical vehicles in the GURPS Vehicles series . . .
